Atoms, Molecules, and Ions Flashcards
(43 cards)
Law of definite proportions.
Different samples of the same compound always contain its constituent elements in the same proportion by mass.
Law of multiple proportions.
If two elements can combine to form more than one compound, the masses of one element that combine with a fixed mass of the other element are in ratios of small whole numbers.
Define Radiation.
The emission and transmission of energy through space in the form of waves.
Alpha rays consist of?
Positively charges particles called alpha particles..
Beta rays consist of?
Beta particles, are electrons.
What is the mass of an electron?
9.10938 x 10^-28 g
What is the mass of a proton?
1.67262 x 10^-24 g
What is the mass of a neutron?
1.67493 x 10^24 g
The atomic number is a measure of what?
the number of protons in the nucleus of each atom of an element.
The mass number is defined as?
The total number of neutrons and protons present in the nucleus of an atom of an element.
The elements can be divided into what three categories?
Metal, Nonmetal, Metalloid.
What are the properties of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids?
A metal is a good conductor of heat and electricity. A nonmetal is a poor conductor of heat and electricity. A metalloid has properties that are intermediate between metal and nonmetal.
What makes a molecule diatomic?
If it contains only two atoms.
Elements that exist normally as diatomic molecules?
H, N, O, as well as Group 7A elements F,Cl, Br, I.
Polyatomic molecules are?
Molecules containing more than two atoms.
What is an Ion?
An atom or group of atoms that have a net positive or negative charge.
A cation has what charge?
Positive.
A anion has what charge?
Negative.
What is an Ionic compound?
A compound formed from Cations and Anions.
Metals tend to form what type of ion?
Cation.
Nonmetals tend to form what type of ion?
Anion.
A molecular formula…
Shows the exact number of atoms of each element in the smallest unit of a substance.
An allotrope is?
One of two or more distinct forms of an element. Diamond and graphite are alltropes of carbon.
The subscript of the cation is equal to what?
The charge of the anion.
