evolutionary explanation for attachment
The idea that babies being attached to a caregiver provides a survival advantage and that is why were are evolved to have attachments. E.G: a baby who is not attached to their mother may wander off and get killed- meaning babies with good attachment survive through natural selection.
Brazelton’s still face experiment
Testing social releasers
- the caregiver and infant have a normal reaction
- the caregiver the suddenly moves to a neutral, unresponsive reaction.
- the caregiver then returns to their normal interaction.
If the baby is securely attached, they should typically display distress, withdrawal, or attempt to engage with the caregiver.
This shows how social releasers are an important part of emotional/attachment development
