What is the continuity hypothesis in context of the IWM (A01)?
Proposes that individuals who are securely attached in infancy continue to be socially and emotionally competent.
What is a weakness of the monotropic theory (A01)?
Schaffer and Emerson suggest that multiple attachments are more common in babies than monotropy, they found by 18 months only 13% of the infants had only one attachment.
What did Hazan and Shaver want to study (A01)?
The connection between a persons infant attachment style, their IWM, and their adult attachment style.
What was Hazan and Shaver’s procedure (A01)?
They placed a ‘Love quiz’ in a small town American newspaper. They used questions about relationships with parents (to identify infant attachment style), attitudes towards love (to asses IWM) and current relationship experiences(to determine adult attachment style). They analysed 620 responses, 205 from men and 415 from women
What did Hazan and Shaver find (A01)?
They found that 56% were secure, 23% were insecure avoidant and 19% were insecure resistant. Suggests most ppls infant attachment styles are the same as adult. Also found that individuals with a positive IWM and securely attached adults.
What is a weakness of Hazan and Shavers study (A03)?
Relies on participants memories about their early lives in order to asses their infant attachment style. Likely to have flaws as memories are not always accurate thus the study isn’t valid.
What is a weakness of Hazan and Shavers study (A03)?
The study is correlational rather than experimental. Its impossible to say infant attachments styles determine adult attachments. Could be other variables involved
