Attention and Concentration 1.10.24 Flashcards
(23 cards)
What is concentration?
the mental effort placed on sensory or mental events. Person’s ability to exert deliberate mental effort
What are the 4 components of concentration?
Selective attention
Maintain attentional focus
Situational awareness
Shifting attentional focus when necessary
What is the difference between experts and novices in attentional processing?
Make faster and better decisions
Search more systematically for cues
Can predict ball flight patterns
What is attentional selectivity?
Letting info into the processing system while other info is ignored
What is human performance limited by?
Being too broad
Being distracted
Unable to shift focus quickly
What is Attentional capacity?
There’s a limited amount of info that can be processed at one time
What is controlled processing?
Mental processing involving conscious attention
What is Automatic Processing?
Mental processing without conscious attention
Athletes change from controlled to automatic as they get better
What is expertise characterised by?
Shifting from controlled to automatic
What are the 4 types of attentional focus? (table)
Broad
Narrow
Internal
External
Broad/external attentional focus?
assesses situation quickly
Narrow/external attentional focus?
Can home in on one or two shots
Broad/internal attentional focus?
Planning a shot/ game plan
Narrow/internal attentional focus?
Mentally rehearse/ relaxation
What is associative attentional strategy?
monitoring bodily functions eg HR, Breathing rate
What is dissociative attentional strategy
Not monitoring bodily function, distraction
What can dissociation do?
Does not increase probability of injury, but can decrease fatigue and monotony
Who should use dissociation?
people who want to increase adherence to exercise
What are examples of internal distractions?
Fatigue, inadequate motivation, choking under pressure
What are external distractions?
Visual and auditory distractions
Explain choking as an attention problem
an attentional process that leads to impaired performance and the inability to retain control
What is conscious processing hypothesis?
Choking occurs when skilled performers focus too much of their conscious attention to the task as much as a novice
