Following equipment shall be assembled in readiness and placed on company apparatus when snow or ice emergency is imminent, Phase A or B:

A
  • AT LEAST 6 extra lengths of 2 1/2” hose, rolled or folded, on ENGINE AND LADDER
  • 2 shovels (4 for use at quarters)
  • containers of sand/salt
  • vehicle recovery strap with shackle
  • tire chains, spare links and link tool
  • specialized hydrant connection set up as DETERMINED BY INDIVIDUAL COMMANDING OFFICERS
  • RESERVE apparatus as well
  • COMPANY COMMANDERS maintain minimum of 6 shovels for snow clearance in front of quarters (2 ON RIG)

supply of sand/salt from local DS storage depots
-CC shall avoid indiscriminate use of de-icers, such as crystallized salt

Units Placing a YELLOW DISC on hydrant NOT in their Admin Area shall Promptly notify OFFICER ON DUTY who is administratively responsible for the hydrant. The notified Officer shall enter the frozen hydrant info. in the HANSEN HYDRANT APPLICATION

  • BACKING ENGINE INTO BLOCK
  • PRINCIPLE Of getting ONE LINE INTO OPERATION-except where obviously unsuitable
  • use of MANIFOLD CARRIED BY SATELLITE UNITS

  • when aerial/TL NOT USED- HYDRANT AVAILABILITY IS CRITICAL..portables and tools carried by one hand
  • consideration to assigning 2 MEMBERS TO ROOF–TAKE A SHOVEL, if necessary
  • consider gradient of roof
  • members shall use water from FAUCETS, POTS, PAILS, for INCIPIENT FIRES or to check extension while lines are being stretched

When su-freezing weather conditions occur.. 25 degrees or less for 24 hours period, Divisions shall institute an inspection and corrective action program to identify and THAW FROZEN HYDRANTS

BC’s shall cause inspection to be made of the following:
-hydrants having defective drainage assemblies previously reported, but not yet repaired
-hydrants at construction and demolition sites
-hydrants used within past 24 hours
hydrants with drain plugs
-hydrants with ground water problem
LI valve pits, subject to freezing
