Audition: Anatomy of the Ear Flashcards
(13 cards)
What does the Tympanic Membrane separate?
The outer ear from the middle ear.
What are the three bones of the middle ear called?
Ossicles.
What is the Malleus also known as?
The ‘hammer’.
What is the function of the Stapes?
Transmits vibrations to the oval window and is known as the ‘stirrup’.
What is the Attenuation Reflex?
Involuntary contraction of the Stapedius muscle to protect the ossicles from loud sounds.
What is the function of the Oval Window?
Transmits sound vibrations into the fluid within the cochlea.
What is the Cochlea?
The snail-shaped structure of the inner ear that contains the auditory transducing mechanism.
What is the Organ of Corti?
The sensory organ on the basilar membrane that contains the auditory hair cells.
What are Hair Cells?
The receptive cells of the auditory apparatus.
What is the role of Deiters’ Cell?
A supporting cell found in the organ of Corti that sustains auditory hair cells.
What does the Basilar Membrane contain?
The organ of Corti.
What does the Tectorial Membrane do?
Serves as a shelf against which the cilia of the auditory hair cells move.
What is the function of the Round Window?
Permits vibrations to be transmitted into the fluid in the cochlea.
