AUGUSTINE TEACHING ON HUMAN NATURE Flashcards
(29 cards)
What happens in genesis 1-2
God creates a perfect world containing harmony between the body, will and reason, he made humans the pinnacle of his creation
what was adam and eves relationship like
the ideal relationship, it was a marriage with friendship and enjoyed a friendship with God, wasnt driven by lust
what affected this
the fall, they ate from the tree even though they were told not to
what happened because of their disobedience
they realised they were naked, God punished women by saying childbirth will be painful, God punished man by saying they will have to work forever
what did augustine see the fall as
the turning point of humanity, harmony was lost between the will, body and reason, the will was corrupted and therefore was human nature. people started being driven by lust
what were the effects of the fall according to augustine
friendship had been damaged and driven by lust, concuspiscence rules human will now, our choices are warped and we make selfish desires.
what do protestants believe about the fall
it has completely corrupted human nature and it cant be dealt with by humans alone
what do catholics believe about the fall
human nature has been weakened and people must struggle with concuspiscence
what is the difference about the belief of concuspiscene for catholics and protestants
catholoics believe its what causes the sin, protestants believe its the sin itself
how does augustine believe the effects of the fall can be seen
human actions and how we treat each other, every sin is driven by concuspiscence
how does Paul outline the nature of concuspiscence
through his letter to the romans- the will is affected by the fall, paul writes about how hes driven to do wrong things because of concuspiscence.
what after the fall is caused by human pride
the will is divided, and tears humans apart by what they know they should and shouldnt do,this leads to augustine rejecting that humans are completely free and he ended up with a hardened view of predestination
what is predestination
God chooses which people recieve salvation
how does this view leave humans
powerless, all they can do is live life and hope they are apart of the people God has chosen
what is grace
this is Gods generous love given to us at all times even thought we dont deserve it
what do the effects of the fall mean
humans cant restore their relationship with God on their own, it can only be restored through the direct action of his grace
how is Gods grace shown
the death of Jesus on the cross, this is the second tree that made up for the sins of the first tree
what does augustine say that even humans with faith do
turn away from God, due to original sin, but God still allows them to go to heaven.
what is the summun bonum
this is an eternal state of happiness that can be found through God, its a state that is brought from God by his grace, a state of heaven.
what does augustine say about the summun bonum
it can only be achieved through having faith in God
how did the fall affect society
led to corruption and a lack of stability, society is led by humans that are led by concuspiscence, the harmony of it no longer exists, neither does a relationship with God
what does augustine think about the state
he believes its a way to punish society
what makes him think this
it has the power to give orders, to kill, to fight,to punish, to encourage slavery
what are the 2 cities augustine wrote of
earthly city, heavenly city of God
