Appointed Treasurer under Curtin 1941, known as one of best for funding war effort and financial responsibility
Challenged ballot after Curtin died and won in 1945
Faced Menzies Liberal Party in 1946 election and won - first incumbent labor govt re-elected
Last PM to serve as own treasurer for lengthy period
Undertook social welfare objectives - fairer pensions and benefits, built universities, built 200K houses
Passed a record 299 acts (well beyond Fisher’s 113 acts in 1910)
1946 referendum changed constitution gave commonwealth power over social services
Paved way for pharmaceutical benefits scheme (pbs)

Nicknamed Black Jack due to black eyebrows, grim nature and temper
Policy of high tariff protection for manufacturing
1958 leader of country party after Fadden retires
Chose to be trade minister so Holt took treasurer and every treasurer in Coalition since has been liberal
1967 at age 68 he was oldest to be elected PM
Sparked leadership crisis when his party withdrew support for Liberal McMahon, forced him to withdraw as leader of party, 2nd time Country party ever vetoed the senior party leader choice (1st was Earle Page removed Billy Hughes in 1923)

1942 plane flipped while landing and suffered severe face injuries, left on island, rescued and sent to Singapore, put on escape boat which gets bombed, spent day on life raft in ocean, made it out to Fremantle, then posted to Darwin, released in 1944
1946 is elected to Kerang Shire council
1949 became Senator for VIC
Economic nationalism, strong central govt, support for nuclear energy
Hardline anti-communist
1958 Minister for Navy, longest serving (5 year)
1959 - Matrimonial Causes Bill - uniform divorce laws
