A

On June 3rd, 1992 five Torres Straight Islanders, including Eddie Mabo, made legal proceedings to establish a title for the Meriam people. This important due to the significance of the High Court acknowledging the unique connections the Indigenous hold with the land.

A

The Wik decision that took place on the 23rd December 1996, enforced the Australian government to question whether statutory leases extinguishing native title rights. The conclusion came that statutory leases did. It bestow rights of native title right but where there are con flights of rights, the pastoral lease will eliminate the remaining native title rights.

What was the referendum of 1967?

A

Harold Holt, leader of the liberal government and prime minister at the time, called for a referendum to also allow the federal government to legislate for Aboriginal and Torres straight islander people rather then leaving this to different state governments.
