Autonomic Nervous System Drugs Flashcards
(20 cards)
List the effects of Alpha 1 Adrenergic receptors.
Eye - pupil dilation
Blood vessels - vasoconstriction (increased BP)
Bladder - bladder relaxes (less pressure = less need to pee); constriction of bladder sphincter
Influences one type of receptor
SELECTIVE
Influences all receptors
NON-SELECTIVE
Sends impulses to the CNS
AFFERENT
Receives impulses, transmits through the spinal cord to effector organ cells
EFFERENT
List the effects of Beta 1 Adrenergic receptors.
Heart - increased heart rate to pump more blood, increased conduction through AV node, increased force of contraction
Kidney - secretes renin to retain water
What are the other names for Adrenergic drugs?
Adrenergic agonists & Sympathomimetics (because they mimic the SNS)
What are Beta-Adrenergic Adverse Effects?
CNS - tremors, headaches, nervousness, dizziness
Cardiovascular - Palpitations, tachycardia, dysrhythmia, angina
Other - sweating, nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps
WHAT ARE THE ADVERSE EFFECTS
A –Agitation
B –Blurred vision
C-Constipation, Confusion
D –Dry mouth
S –Stasis of urine and Sweating
ADVERSE SIDE EFFECTS
-Prolong Apnea
-Hyperkalemia
-Malignant Hyperthermia
ADVERSE REACTIONS
D -Diarrhea
U -Urination
M –Miosis and Muscle Weakness
B -Bronchorrhea
B -Bradycardia
E -Emesis
L -Lacrimation
S –Salivation/ Sweating
List the effects of Beta 2 Adrenergic receptors.
Smooth muscle of lungs - bronchodilation
Drugs that produces a response
Agonist
Drugs that blocks a response
Antagonist
Has a catechol ring and amines
CATECHOLAMINES
SIDE EFFECTS OF ADRENERGIC AGONISTS
Headache.
Tremor.
Irritation/burning in the eye.
Blurred vision.
Hypertension.
Tachycardia (irregular heartbeat)
Palpitation.
Dry mouth
Blocking the transmission at the sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglia in the autonomic nervous system
GANGLIONIC BLOCKERS
Effects of Beta-blockers (atenolol/metoprolol) and adverse effects.
-Decreased demand for myocardial oxygen (decreased angina).
-Decreased heart rate.
-Decreased force of contraction (lowers hypertension).
When Autonomic drugs are given, the goal is not to treat an autonomic disorder, it is to correct disorders of target organs through autonomic nerves
PHARMACOLOGIC EFFECT
What are Alpha 1 Adrenergic Adverse Effects?
dizziness, headache, palpitations, fluid retention, drowsiness, weakness, priapism, thrombocytopenia and atrial fibrillation;
