Autonomic s Flashcards
(32 cards)
Name the parasympathetic ganglia
Ciliary, Otic, pterygopalatine, submandibular
With which nerve is the Otic ganglion associated?
It sits on the medial aspect of V3.
It carries fibres from Glossopharyngeal nerve
What do fibres from the Otic ganglion supply?
Parotid Gland
Do synapses occur in all head and neck ganglia?
No. Only autonomic ganglia because sensory ganglia are the location of the nerve cell bodies.
Where do sympathetic fibres synapse?
In the cervical ganglia.
Fibres of which nerve supply secretomotor supply to the parotid gland?
GVE of Glossophayngeal
Describe the course of the SVE fibres to the parotid gland.
These are from the glossopharyngeal nerve and pass through the jugular foramen before passing into the middle ear cavity and running on the medial surface of the tympanic membrane as a plexus. The nerve reforms and enters the petrous part of the temporal bone as the lesser pterosal nerve. This exits back into the cranial cavity through the hiatus for for the lesser pterosal nerve and then exits with V3 through foramen ovale to Synapse in the Otic ganglion. Following this fibres run with the auriculotemporal nerve (V3) to the gland.
What nerve supplies the substance of the parotid gland with GSA?
Auriculotemporal V3
What parasympathetic fibres synapse in the submandibular ganglion?
GVE fibres of VII running to the sunblingual and submandibular glands.
Which ganglion do facial nerve fibres pass through prior to entering the middle ear cavity?
Geniculate ganglion
Which branch of the facial nerve carries SVE fibres?
Chorda Tympani
Which branch of the trigeminal nerve carries SVE to the submandibular ganglion
V3 - lingual nerve
Where do fibres of VII running to the lacrimal gland synapse?
Pterygopalatine Ganglion
Describe the route of SVE of VII to the palatine salivary glands.
These exit through the internal acoustic meatus to the geniculate ganglion and then run through the petrous part of the temporal bone as the greater pterosal nerve. This then passes into the pterygopalatine canal as the nerve of the pterygopalatine canal and then into the pterygopalatine fossa and synapses in the pterygopalatine ganglia. Post synaptic fibres run inferiorly with the palatine Nerves.
Which glands are supplied by SVE which synapse in the pterygopalatine ganglion?
Lacrimal, nasal and accessory salivary glands of the palate.
Describe the course of post-synaptic fibres to the lacrimal gland. From the pterygopalatine ganglion.
These fibres run superiorly along the maxillary nerve back towards the trigeminal ganglion and turn to run on the zygomatic branch of the maxillary nerve. This branches and the fibres run with zygomaticotemporal nerve to the lacrimal nerve of V1 where they continue their course to the lacrimal gland.
In which bone is the pterygoid canal found?
Sphenoid
SVE to the nasal glands is from which cranial nerve?
Facial
What nerve carries sympathetic fibres to the nasal glands?
A periarterial plexus around the ICA carries sympathetic fibres into the cranial cavity and then this forms one nerve… the deep pterosal nerve which runs and joins with the greater pterosal nerve to form the nerve of the pterygoid canal.
Where do pterosal nerves run?
In the petrous part of the temporal bone.
What nerve carries autonomic supply to the eye.
Occulomotor
Which autonomic ganglion is associated with the eye?
Ciliary.
What are the parasympathetically supplied muscles of the eye?
Ciliaris, constrictor pupillae
Which division of the autonomic nervous system supplies dilator pupillae?
Sympathetic
