What is AVN?
A
avascular necrosis of bone mainly in adults

What can AVN be secondary to?
A
fractures eg of femoral neck

What can AVN be caused by abuse of?
A
alcohol and steroid (related to alteration of fat metabolism)

What other conditions can cause AVN?
A
sickle cell, thrombophilia, antiphospholipid

Rare cause of AVN?
A
Caisson’s disease/decompression sickness after deep sea diving

Treatment of AVN?
A
deoends on stage, if articular surface has no collapsed, drilling can be done to decompress
If it has collapsed, joint replacement needed
If foot/ankle, consider fusion
