Axial Skeleton Flashcards
(25 cards)
What forms the axial skeleton?
Skull, the hyoid, the spine and ribcage
What bones are in the skull?
Facial (sits rostrally) and brain casing (cranial)
What joins the 2 mandibles?
Mandibular symphysis
what is the dorsal part of the vertical ramus called?
The coronoid process
What does the maxilla form?
The lateral surface of the muzzle
Where does the nasal bone sit?
The dorsal surface of the muzzle
What does the premaxilla contain?
Upper incisor teeth
What does the frontal bone form?
The cranio-dorsal part of the cranium and contains a paranasal sinus
What does the parietal bone form?
The Caudo-dorsal part of the cranium
Where does the occipital bone and crest sit?
The caudal skull to articulate with the spine
What is the foramen magnum?
Where the spinal cord exits the skull
Where is the jugular process?
Lateral to the foramen magnum
Where is the temporal bone?
Forms the lateral and central part of the cranium
What does the temporal bone contain?
The external ear canal and tympanic bulla
What type of joint is the TMJ
A synovial joint
What is the zygomatic arch?
A bony arch that protects the eye
What is the external sagittal crest?
The bony crest on the dorsal surface of the skull
What is the hyoid?
A small collection of bones that supports the larynx & connects to the temporal bone
What is the spine made up of?
A long row of vertebrae
What are the basic parts of a vertebra?
- Spinous process - a dorsal projection
- Transverse processes - lateral projections
- Vertebral foramen - large central hole for the spinal cord
- Vertebral body - main cylinder of bone
How are all the vertebrae connected?
By ligaments and intervertebral discs
What are the 5 sections of the spine?
Cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral and coccygeal
What is the vertebral formula for cats and dogs?
