B13 Flashcards
What is a chromosome?
its made up of long molecules of DNA
What does DNA stand for?
deoxyribonucleic acid
What is DNA?
a polymer which is made up of many repeating units, spiralled into a double helix.
What is DNA made from?
a sugar, base and phoshate
What is a nucleotide?
the combination of a sugar, a phosphate and a base.
What are the bases called?
ATCG
What are proteins made from?
amino acids
What is a mutation?
a random change in the sequence of bases
Sexual reproduction…
requires a male and female sex cells (gametes)
How many bases code for an amino acid?
3
Benefits of asexual reproduction?
quick and doesn’t need a mate
Benefits of sexual reproduction?
they a genetically different
How many pairs of chromosomes are in a human cell?
23
Haploid…
having half the normal number of chromosomes
Diploid…
having the normal number of chromosomes
Mitosis…
is used for growth and repair - produces two diploid daughter cells (which are identical to each other and parent cell)
Meiosis…
is used to produce a gametes - produces four haploid daughter cells (which are different to each other and to the parent cell)
Equation for fertilization =
human sperm + human egg cell = human zygote
Alleles…
different versions of the same gene
Dominant…
stronger gene (only need 1 alleles to express the characteristics)
Recessive…
weaker gene (need both alleles to be the same for characteristics)
Heterozygous =
alleles which are different eg Bb
Homozygous =
alleles which are the same eg BB
Genotype =
the genetic make up of an organism (the combination of alleles eg BB)
