B16 Ecosystems Flashcards
(11 cards)
Producer
An organism which produce biomass (organic matter) for themselves. Mostly plants or micro-organisms.
Consumer
An organism which consumes (eat) it’s prey.
Predator
An organism which eats it’s prey to survive
Prey
“Food” which organisms eat to survive.
Why materials must be recycled
To provide building blocks for future organisms
The importance of the water cycle
It provides fresh water for animals and plants before being drained by soil, and then being evaporated, condensed, and precipitated again.
Carbon dioxide’s use in the atmosphere
Carbon dioxide is absorbed by plants for photosynthesis
Chemical elements recycled when animals and plants decay
The carbon returns to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, and mineral ions are released inti the soil.
Role of photosynthesis in the carbon cycle
Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for photosynthesis
Role of respiration in the carbon cycle
When animals respire, they release carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
Role of combustion into the carbon cycle
When carbon dioxide is burnt and released into the atmosphere, this causes heat in oceans and the air
