Q

How has the increasing human population impacted the land?

A

Land used for farming, quarries, housing etc has destroyed habitats and reduced biodiversity

From landfill and toxic chemicals (e.g. pesticides and herbicides)

Q

What effect does pollution have on the environment?

6
Q

How is acid rain formed?

A

Fossil fuels are burned.
Sulfur dioxide is formed.
It dissolves in rainwater and reacts with oxygen and forms acid rain (pH 2.0)

7
Q

What are the effects of acid rain?

A

Kills leaves, buds, flowers, fruits. Makes bodies of water acidic.

Q

How do particulates from smoke pollution impact the earth?

A

They cause a dimming effect that could lead to cooling of the earths surface

Q

How does pear destruction impact the environment?

A

Loss of biodiversity and the decay/burning of peat releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere

16
Q

What are examples of geographical changes?

A

Altitude, saltiness of water, availability of water

17
Q

What negative changes can occur as a result of human activities?

A

Global warming, pollution, acid rain

18
Q

What positive changes can occur as a result of human activities?

A

Maintaining rainforests, reducing pollution, species conservation

19
Q

What 2 things make breeding programmes difficult?

A

Not reproducing easily and loss of habitat to breed in

20
Q

What are trophies levels?

A

The positions of organisms within a food chain

21
Q

What are trophic levels 1,2,3&4?

A

1= producers
2= primary consumers
3= secondary consumers
4= tertiary consumers

22
Q

What is the amount of biomass in the organisms at each trophic level less than the previous level?

A

Not all parts of organisms are eaten by the stage above. Some biomass is lost in waste, some is used to produce energy for movement, respiration and temperature control.

23
Q

What happens to excess protein in an animal?

A

It’s broken down into amino acids

24
Q

What 2 things can affect food security?

A

Increasing birth rate and a change in diet

25
How can food efficiency be improved?
Restricting energy from food animals to the environment (limiting movement, controlling temp etc.)
26
Why and how should we protect fish species from overfishing?
Why: certain species may disappear all together How: controlling net sizes and fish quotas
27
What can genetically modified bacteria be used for?
Producing insulin on an industrial size
28
What could genetically modified crops provide?
More food with improved nutritional value.
