B19 - Human Influences on Ecosystem Flashcards
(15 cards)
Ecosystem
A unit containing the community of organisms and their environment, interacting together
Biodiversity
The number of different that live in an area
Reasons for habitat destruction (3)
- increased area for housing, crop plant production and livestock production
- extraction of natural resources
- freshwater and marine pollution - eutrophication
Effects of deforestation
It’s habitat destruction
- reducing biodiversity
- extinction
- loss of soil
- flooding
- increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
Extinction
When no individuals of a species remain
Endangered (species)
A species that is considered to be at high risk of extinction
Why do organisms become endangered or extinct (6)
- climate change
- habitat destruction
- hunting
- over-harvesting
- pollution
- introduced species
Conservation methods (4)
- monitoring and protecting species and habitats
- education
- captive breeding programs
- seed banks
Why is biodiversity important (2)
- species are interconnected so removing one species can affect others and throw off / upset the balance
- humans need it for raw materials
Species
Organisms that are able to breed together and produce fertile offspring
Habitat
A place where organisms live
Population
All the members of the same species within the same habitat
Community
All the different populations within the same habitat
Biotic + examples (3)
Living
- food availability
- mates
- predators
Abiotic + examples (4)
Non-living
- moisture level
- pH
- temperature
- light intensity
