B1U3 General Tasks And Equipment Flashcards
(41 cards)
What is the function of the control transformer?
To provide the proper value of voltage to operate the power contactor.
What is the purpose of the voltmeter and ammeter?
These allow you to determine the rate of charge that the battery is drawing.
What causes the output voltage to be lower than the input voltage on a battery charger?
The secondary windings have fewer turns than the primary windings.
What is the primary concern when adjusting a battery charger?
The output voltage.
If you are working with a 12-volt battery, what is the range of the output of the battery?
Between 12.5 to 13.2 volts.
Why must you check the adjustments you made to a battery charger the following day?
To take a second look at the charging rate to make sure it is set correctly.
What are the two types of load banks that have been developed?
Portable and stationary.
What is the function of the control/blower voltage selector switch on a load bank?
It allows the operator to select internal or external power sources.
What is the function of the load voltage selector switch on a load bank?
It allows load bank to be configured for different generator output voltages.
What is the function of the master load switch on a load bank?
It connects the generator power to the circuit breakers for the kW step switches.
What is the function of the AC ammeter on a load bank?
It indicates the amperage being drawn by the load bank from the generator.
What is the function of the internal blower on a load bank?
It removes heat from the load bank resistor elements.
What does testing generators with a load bank prevent?
This provides the generator with enough load to prevent carbon buildup known as wet stacking.
Why should you wear leather gloves when handling electrical cables?
To prevent injury.
What should you do before you operate any piece of equipment that you are unfamiliar with?
Read the manufacturer’s manual.
When inspecting the load bank, what should you look for inside the load bank housing?
Search for any debris or foreign matter inside load bank that could be blocking airflow.
What safety precaution should you observe if you are replacing the heater elements on a load bank?
Be sure that the heater elements have had time to cool completely before you begin your work.
Describe galvanic corrosion.
It can be one of the most common forms of corrosion as well as one of the most destructive. It occurs when two dissimilar metal types are in contact with each other and moisture is introduced. Galvanic corrosion seriously degrades the softer of the two metals.
How does pitting first appear on a metal surface?
As a gray or white powdery substance.
What is the key to a good corrosion control program?
Preventive maintenance.
What are the two types of coolant heaters?
Circulating and immersion.
How do immersion coolant heaters spread heat throughout the engine?
By convection.
Why is it important that you do not use starting fluid on engines that are equipped with glow plugs?
Using starting fluid can cause an explosion that can damage the engine and cause injury to you.
What is the only safe method of using ether?
With a closed dispensing system.
