B2 cell specialisation Flashcards
(10 cards)
Need for specialisation?
to help cells get the resources they need & for organisms to work in contrast to a collection of independent cells
What is cell specialisation?
is the process by which generic cells develop into distinct types with unique functions.
Stem cells are?
undifferentiated cells with the potential to develop into many different types of cells in the body.
2 main type of stem cells?
embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells.
Plant stem cells?
are found in the meristem tissue , can differenicate into any type of plant cell,
animal stem cells?
Are found in the bone marrow and can develop into different type of blood cells.
Root hair cells are
specialised plant cells which help the plant absorb water in soil.
What does root hair cells also do?
absorb water for photosynthesis and metabolic actions
&
absorb in minerals such as magnesium and nitrogen
What are the adaptations of root hair cell?
lots of mitochondria,
Thin cell wall
Long hair like extension
No chloroplasts
Membrane permeability is SELECTIVE
How do these adaptations help?
lots of mitochondria, which gives energy for active transport
