Q

State the function of some of the organs of the digestive system.

A

The function of the heart is to pump blood throughout your circulatory system.

The function of the stomach is to aid digestion.

The function of the small intestine is to absorb most of the nutrients from what we eat and drink.

The function of the large intestine is to absorb water and salts from the material that has not been digested as food, and get rid of any waste products left over.

Q

State simply what happens to food during digestion.

A

The digestive system converts the foods we eat into their simplest forms, like glucose (sugars), amino acids (that make up protein) or fatty acids (that make up fats). The broken-down food is then absorbed into the bloodstream from the small intestine and the nutrients are carried to each cell in the body.

Q

Explain in detail how the small intestine is adapted to its function.

A

The inner wall of the small intestine has adapted so that substances pass across it quickly and efficiently: it has a thin wall, just one cell thick. it has many tiny villi to give a really big surface area.
