B5: Endocrine system Flashcards
(15 cards)
what is the endocrine system composed of?
glands which secrete hormones (chemical messengers) directly into the bloodstream to bring about a response/effect
what are the 6 main glands?
pituitary gland - known as master gland, located in brain
thyroid gland
adrenal glands - located on the kidneys
pancreas
ovaries
testes
which four hormones does the pituitary gland secrete?
TSH - thyroid stimulating hormone
LH - luteinising hormone
FSH - follicle stimulating hormone
ADH - antidiuretic hormone
what is the effect of TSH?
stimulates the thyroid gland to release thyroxine
what is the effect of LH?
triggers egg release and progesterone production in ovaries
what is the effect of FSH
triggers egg ripening and oestrogen production in ovaries
what is the effect of thyroxine?
involved in regulating the basal metabolic rate, heart rate and body temp. stimulates protien synthesis for growth and repair
what two hormones does the pancrease secrete?
insulin
glucagon
what is the effect of insulin?
lowers blood glucose
what is the effect of glucagon
increases blood glucose concentration
what is adrenaline?
it is produced in the adrenal glands.
the brain detec ts fear or stress and serves nerve impulses
triggers mechanisms to increase the supple of oxygen and glucose to the brain
what two hormones are produced in the ovaries?
oestrogen
progesterone
what is the effect of oestrogen?
causes lining of the uterus to grow
what is the purpose of progesterone?
maintains the lining of the uterus
