(10 cards)
What is a more accurate way of measuring volume of gas rather than counting bubbles and why?
Using a gas syringe is more accurate.
This is because bubbles may have different volumes of gas.
Why would an electric water bath be used instead of a Bunsen burner?
The water bath is better at maintaining a constant and specific temperature
A Bunsen burner has fire risks
What is the inverse square rule (how do you calculate light intensity)?
1 ÷ distance ²
What are the independent, dependant and control variables?
(What axis do the independent and dependant variables go on on a graph)?
Independent- what you change. Only one should be used for a valid experiment. (Goes on X axis)
Dependent- What you measure. (Goes on Y axis)
Control- What you keep the same.
What do these 5 words mean?
Accurate
Precise
Repeatable
Reproducible
Valid
Accurate- Are the results what they should be?
Precise- The results don’t vary much from the mean.
Repeatable- Do you get the same results if you repeat the experiment?
Reproducible- If someone else did they experiment, would they get the same results?
Valid- Only 1 independent variable (only change one thing).
What things could be wrong with a graph?
-May be different numbers of decimal points in data
-Units in the data instead of in the headings
Why should you repeat an experiment?
Repeating an experiment at least 3 times, allows you to calculate an average and identify anomalies.
How do you calculate a percentage change?
Final value- Starting Value
Divided by Starting Value
X 100
If you are asked how you can improve an experiment,
1) how should you answer the question?
2) what could you consider?
1) write an improvement for the method and an improvement for the equipment
2) are the intervals appropriate measurements?
Are the organisms the same species?
Do you need to expand the data?
What is the ‘I AM’ equation?
How do you convert from mm to ųm?
Image size = Actual Size x Magnification
mm -> ųm (x 1000)
