B7.4-5 The Heart & Cardiac Cycle Flashcards
(10 cards)
Where is the atrioventricular valve located
In-between the atrium and ventricle
Where is the semi lunar valve located
Between the ventricle and blood vessels
Role of the coronary artery
Supply the heart with blood
What happens if the coronary artery is blocked
Cells die, leading to a heart attack
What is cardiac output
Volume of blood pumped by a ventricle in 1 minute
Cardiac output formula
Stroke volume x heart rate
3 steps in the cardiac cycle
Diastole
Atrial systole
Ventricular systole
What happens in diastole
Atrium and ventricle relax
Blood enters atrium
When atrial blood pressure > ventricular blood pressure, atrioventricular valve opens
What happens in atrial systole
Atrium contracts, increasing pressure further
Remaining blood enters ventricles
What happens in ventricular systole
Ventricles contract
Atrioventricular valves close (BP in Ventricles higher than atrium) (to prevent backflow)
Semilunar valves open, blood moves into vessels
When BP in vessels is greater than ventricles, semi lunar valve closes
