Back pain - common causes (2)
Muscle strain
Sleeping in awkward position
Back pain - what is capsulitis
Also known as frozen shoulder, caused by inflammation of the shoulder tissue and formation of scar tissue, restricting movement
Sciatica - explanation of condition
When there is inflammation or movement of a spinal disc, causing pressure to be applied to the nerve that runs down the leg
Lumbago - explanation of condition
Lower back pain caused by straining of the muscle
Back pain - referral (8)
Shortness of breath
Radiating around the chest
No improvement after 4 weeks
Signs of kidney infection
Associated with weight loss or change in bowel habits
Period pain
Persistent in middle age > risk of tumour
Children
Back pain - OTC management: first-line (drug, formulation, how it works, extra instructions)
NSAIDs (ibuprofen)
Oral or topical
Works to relieve inflammation and pain
Ensure tablets are taken with food
Use for shortest duration as possible
Back pain - other OTC management (not NSAIDs)
Avoid paracetamol monotherapy
Co-codamol - max 3 days, 18+
Back pain - lifestyle (6)
Keep active and avoid too much bed rest
Use heat packs
Use pillows to help support legs when sleeping
Correct posture
Avoid sitting for too long
Gentle exercises
