What was freuds theory?
He believed that sexual instincts are already present in newborn children
All children go through 5 stages of psycho sexual development
Oral stage
Occurring between birth and 18 months
Child derives satisfaction from sucking at mother or other substitutes
Anal stage
From 18 months
Receives pleasure from holding back their stool and brings about muscular contractions
Phallic stage
Around 2-5 years
Sexual pleasure derived from the genitals
Girls believe they don’t have a penis as they have been castrated
Boys develop a fear of castration
Children see their parents as sexual objects
The latency stage
Aged 5 to puberty
Child’s energy is directed at other interests, such as sport and friendship
The genital stage
From puberty
Sexual instinct emerges with greater intensity but desires are diverted away from child’s parents
