The Norman Conquest of England (1066)

A

William the Conqueror hailing from Northern France, and the leader of the Normans.
These were Basically Frenchmen with Viking roots invading the Anglo Saxon Island and claiming it as their own.
William is important for developing the Domesday Book, the first land survey of the entirety of England.

A

A socio-political system in which lands (fiefs) were tenured in exchange for military service. Was defined and structured by the Domesday book.

Edward I (1272-1307) and the Model Parliament

A

Edward I, aka LONGSHANKS.

  • Son and grandson of two failed kings
  • was considered stern and cruel
  • Needed to raise taxed which resulted in the creation of the MODEL PARLIAMENT.
  • created the precedent that commoners could come together and meet with the king to discuss affairs.
  • The Model Par was important because it established a way of extracting taxes from citizens.

Edward III and the Hundred Years War

A
  • Edward III takes throne from Edward II who had a short rein and a conniving wife.
  • He was a very aggressive King much like his grandfather.
  • Believed he was the rightful heir to the throne of france now that the Capet family had died off.
  • Needed to take out extensive loans from Italian firms to wage war (and he does)
  • Captures king of france and expands English power.
  • Outlives all his sons.

The Pestis or Pestilence, killed a third of the population of europe and peaked between 1340-1350.
-had a major impact on labor and caused workers to demand better wages and or freedom.

Richard II (1377-1399)

A

Takes throne after Edward the 3rd.

  • helped make english a common languge bc of his interest in arts and stuff.
  • Was a follower of wycliffe and lollard stuff.
  • observed peasant revolt and was hated by his people for treatment of peasants.
  • tried to expand into ireland and pissed off Henry of Lancaster

Peasant Revolt (1381) and lollards

A

-Was a result of parliament’s “Poll Tax” that imposed a flat tax on each household and depended on how many people lived in the household.
Lollards were followers of WYCLIFFE AND BELIEVED THAT YOU SHOULD LIVE A MUCH MORE HUMBLE LIfe and was the beginning hints of reformation.

  • takes throne by force from Richard II.
  • Was paranoid of the people around him especially his successful military leader son, Henry V.
  • Helped suppress Lollard movement and people against the church.
