A

Affected system: respiratory tract infection.
Sx: sneezing, coughing, nasal discharge
Tx: vaccines.

Borreliosis (Lyme Disease)

A

Animal Affected: dogs, cats, humans
Sx: lameness and swelling of joints. Bullseye rash in humans.
Tx: detect antibody in blood. Antibiotics and controversial vaccine.

Campylobacteriosis

A

System affected: GI. Zoonotic!
Cause by campylobacter jejuni or coli.
Sx: stress in young animals cause bacteria to proliferate and have diarrhea and vomiting.
Tx: erythromycin.

Cat Scratch Disease

A

Affects: humans
From: scratch or bite from kitten
Sx: bump at injury site, enlargement of lymph nodes.
Tx: wash site with soap. Immunocompromised persons should avoid young cats. Cats shouldn’t lick wounds.
60% of cats are seropositive, but no clinical disease.

Helicobacter infections

A

Animal effected: dogs and cats
System: GI in stomach. Human gastric ulcers.
Tx: biopsy dx. Antibiotics and cimetidine to inhibit gastric acids.
*may or may not produce disease. Unclear if zoonotic.

Leptospirosis

A

Animal affected: cats, humans
From: direct contact with infected animals, soil, water, other substances, farm ponds.
Sx: fever, decrease appetite, muscle pain, vomiting, cough, painful eyes, etc.
Kidney and liver disease in cats.
Tx: dx in urine where it sheds, antibiotics.
Leptospirosis interrogates - spirochete

A

From: feces and ingesting contaminated food
Sx: vomiting, diarrhea, fever, wt. loss
Tx: culturing fecal matter

From: fungal infection living in skin, hair, claws, or nails. Warm humid condition favor development
Sx: patchy hair loss and deformed claws
Tx: long term anti fungal causing side effects and expensive. Dx by culture of organism
