Bacterial Cells Flashcards
How do bacterial cells compare to plant and animals cells by size?
Bacterial cells are smaller
Do bacterial cells contain a nucleus?
No
What are the sub-cellular structures in a bacterial cell?
Chromosomal DNA, ribosomes, cell membrane, plasmid DNA and a flagellum
What is the chromosomal DNA?
The chromosomal DNA is one long circular chromosome and controls the cell’s activities and replication. It floats free in the cytoplasm
What are the plasmid DNA?
The plasmid DNA are small loops of extra DNA that aren’t part of the chromosome. They contain genes for things like drug resistance and can be passed between bacteria.
What is the flagellum?
The flagellum is a long, hair-like structure which rotates to make the bacterium move. It can be used to move the bacteria away from harmful substances and towards beneficial nutrients.
