1
Q

What bugs don’t gram stain well?

A

Treponema - dark filed microscopy and fluorescent antibody staining
Rickettsia (intracellular parasite)
Mycobacterium (high lipid content in cell wall, requires acid fast stain)
Mycoplasma (no cell wall)
Legionella (silver stain)
Chlamydia (intracellular, lacks muramic acid in cell wall.

“These rascals may microscopically lack colour.”
