A plan of government
Constitution
A system of leaders and laws for making decisions for a community, state, or nation
Government
A form of government in which people rule by making decisions themselves or by electing people to make decisions for them
Democracy
A form of government in which people select their leaders
Republic
The law making branch of government (also called congress)
Legislative branch
A branch of government whose main job is to see that the laws passed by the legislative branch are carried out
Executive branch
A branch of the government whose main job is to see that laws are carried out fairly
Judicial branch
A system that gives each branch of government powers so that each branch can keep the powers of the others from becoming too great
Checks and balances
A way of deciding something in which whoever or whatever gets the most votes wins
Majority rule
It is being a member of and supporting one’s community and country
Citizenship
The right, power, or privilege of making a choice
Election
A person who is running for office in an election
Candidates
To work over a period of time to reach a goal, such as winning an election
Campaign
