Balancing Act (Nitrogen Cycle + EDD) Flashcards
Study all cards (26 cards)
What is Nitrogen?
Nitrogen is a gas that makes up the Atmosphere
Places where Nitrogen can be found
Meteorites, Volcanos, Water, Soil, Rain, Some Stars and Nebulae*
*There can be other places
What’s the Scientific symbol for Nitrogen?
N
What atoms are in one molecule of nitrogen?
1 Nitrogen atom and 2 Oxygen atoms
What is the type of Nitrogen in our bodies?
DNA & Proteins
Nitrogen that we find in the Atmosphere and can’t use
Nitrogen gas (N2)
Bad nitrogen from dead animals/plants that decomposers decompose
Ammonium (NH4+)
“ICKY” Nitrogen that is found in soil
Nitrites (NO2-)
Nitrogen Plants can have
Nitrates (NO3-)
Can we get Nitrogen by breathing it in?
No, we can’t we eat other plants/animals to get nitrogen
What two things “fix” (change) Nitrogen from bad to good?
Lightning & Bacteria
What changes Nitrogen Gas into Ammonium and what is this process called?
Bacteria, this process is called Nitrification
What changes Nitrites into good Nitrates?
Bacteria
What can have Nitrates and what is the process called to give them the Nutrients?
Plants and the process is called Assimilation
What is the process called that animals use to get nitrogen from plants/animals?
Assimilation
What is the name of the process that makes ammonia called?
Ammonification
What is the organism that turns Nitrates into Nitrogen Gas again and what is this process called?
Bacteria and the process is called Denitrification.
What is a Hypothesis?
A prediction that can be tested. Written as an “If__ Then__” statement.
What is an Independent Variable? (IV)
A factor changed by the experimenter in the experiment. (“I” the scientist changed it)
What is a Dependent Variable? (DV)
A factor that responds to the IV/change being made.
What is a EED?
A summary of the plan for the experiment.
What is a Constant?
All factors that remain the same in an experiment.
What are the levels of IV?
Changes that are made in the IV
What is the Control?
Standard of comparison in an experiment. (The one that experiences no changes.)
