Aim
Investigate if children can learn aggressive behavior by watching adults.
Sample
participants 36 boys, 36 girls, 37-69 months old
models were one male adult and one female adult
Procedure
3 conditions
- group exposed to aggressive model
- group exposed to passive model
- control grpup
Experimental groups were further divided by gender of child and gender of model, for a total of 8 experimental groups.
Children tested individually
- brought to experimental room with toys
- watched a model play with Bobo doll either aggressively or non-aggressively, depending on what group they were in
- Brought to a second room with toys
- After playing with toys, told that they were not allowed to, to arouse mild aggression
- Brought to 3rd room with variety of aggressive and non-aggressive toys
- Kept in room for 20 minutes, and specific behaviors obsereved
Results and Conclusion
- Children who saw aggressive model played more aggressively than children who saw non-aggressive model.
- Boys acted more aggressively than girls
Children are more likely to behave aggressively if they are exposed to an aggressive model
