Linea Nigra
referred to as a pregnancy line, is a linear hyperpigmentation that commonly appears on the abdomen
Goodell’s Sign/Soft Cervix
indication of pregnancy. It is a significant softening of the vaginal portion of the cervix from increased vascularization. This vascularization is a result of hypertrophy and engorgement of the vessels below the growing uterus
shows at week 4
Hegar’s Sign/Soft Uterine Isthmus
demonstrated as a softening in the consistency of the uterus, and the uterus and cervix seem to be two separate regions
usually present between weeks 4 and 6. Absent by week 12
Chadwick’s Sign/Bluish Coloration
bluish discoloration of the cervix, vagina, and labia resulting from increased blood flow. It can be observed as early as 6 to 8 weeks after conception, and its presence is an early sign of pregnancy
Fetal station
measurement of how far the baby has descended in the pelvis, measured by the relationship of the fetal head to the ischial spines
Nuchal cord
baby has their umbilical cord wrapped around their neck
tonic neck reflex
baby’s head is turned to one side, the arm on that side stretches out and the opposite arm bends up at the elbow
Truncal Incurvation
side of the infant’s spine is stroked or tapped while the infant lies on the stomach. The infant will twitch their hips toward the touch in a dancing movement.
