Basic Concepts of Organic Chemistry - Representing the Formulae of Organic Compounds Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What is a molecular formula?
A
Actual numbers of each element present in a molecule e.g. ethanol is C₂H₆0.
2
Q
What is an empirical formula?
A
Simplest whole number ratio of the atoms of each element present in a compound e.g. ethene is CH₂.
3
Q
What is a general formula?
A
Simplest algebraic formula for any member of a homologous series, used to generate the molecular formula for any member of that series e.g. alkenes is CnH2n.
4
Q
What is a displayed formula?
A
Relative positioning of all the atoms in a molecule & the bonds between them.
5
Q
What is a skeletal formula?
A
Simplified organic formula that shows the carbon skeleton & functional groups, removing C & H labels, and bonds to H atoms.
