Basic Elec Flashcards
(27 cards)
Electricity
A fundamental property of matter, associated with atomic particles whose movements develop fields of force and generate kinetic and potential energy
Voltage, Volts, V
It is the pressure or force that drives the electrical charge
Call out bubble
Used for tracing a circuit that continues onto a different sheet. The square applies to the light circuit
Test point
Point accessible on a component to take measurements with BOB/Multimeter. Test points are contained within test jacks
Silicon controlled rectifier
A semiconductor that’s basic purpose is to function as a switch that can turn on and off and control large amounts of power.
Transistor
A three electrode semiconductor used as either a switch or an amplifier.
Solenoid
An electromagnet coiled around a movable plunger (armature) when the current energizes the electromagnet the plunger will move to the strongest magnetic field which is the center of the coil
Switch
Device used to open/close the current path of one or more circuits
Momentary switch
When pressed closes a circuit
Resistor
A device capable of providing resistance in an electrical circuit. Used to set up a specific circuit condition by controlling current flow or setting up voltage at a point within a circuit.
Wire
A wire moves electrical current and signals from one point to another point.
Wiring harness
A grouping of several wires together in a bundle. A wiring harness may only have two connectors or branch into several.
Wire connection
Common point where two wires joined
Relay contact
Controlled by a relay coil. Contacts can either be normally open or normally closed
Relay coil
Device using an electromagnet to control a single relay contact or sets of relay contacts. When current flows through the relay coil it is energized which changes the contacts to the opposite of their original position
Ground
A metallic connection with the earth to establish ground potential.
Earth ground- connected to the earth or negative battery terminal.
Vehicle chassis ground- connected to the negative battery terminal through a connection with the vehicle chassis
Diode
A electronic device that restricts current flow chiefly to one direction
Circuit breaker
An electromagnetic or thermally activated device that opens a circuit when the current exceeds a predetermined amount. Manual circuit breakers must be reset, automatic circuit breakers reset themselves
after a short cool down
Capacitor
A device capable of storing an electrical charge. It acts as a shock absorber controlling voltage spikes that would affect other components.
Bus bar
A primary power distribution point connected to a main power source
Current
It is the strength of the electrical charge, the current actually does the work
Resistance
It is the opposition to the current flow
Conductor
Component used to direct the flow of electricity
Continuity
The constant flow of electricity without interruption
