This is commonly used in pregnancy dating. Doctors often measure pregnancy from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP) because the exact date of fertilization is usually unknown. Since ovulation (when an egg is released and can be fertilized) typically happens about two weeks after the start of the last period, the “14 days prior to fertilization” roughly corresponds to the start of the menstrual cycle.
