Basic System Revision Questions Flashcards
What is the definition of a system
It is a series of and inconnected pipes that will deliver a substance from one point to another
What are the two types of system and give an example of each
Open loop system is a fuel system
Closed loop sysytem is a fresh water cooling system
Stat three methods of mesuring the level of a tank
-Indicator gauge
-Sounding tube
(dip tape & conversion chart is used with it)
-Glass gauge
State the purpose of a strainer and what it may be constructed from
The purpose is to remove large , coarse particals from a system.
Its is also made from metal plates with holes in them.
Give examples of materials used in pipework and give a example of for each.
Copper pipes - used for domstic fresh water system
Copper nickel - used for lub oil system
Brass - used for casting
Plastic - used for sewage and pre-wet
Phosphor bronze - used for high presure salt water system (HPSW)
What would need to be considered when selecting a Material for a seal
The system working pressure
The fluid being used
Temputeres involved
Give examples of materials used to manufacture seals
Rubber , cork , papper , leather , copper
State examples of seals used
Mechanical seals
Keelering couplings
Gland packing
State six types of valve
Globe valve
Gate valve
Flap valve
Sauders valve
Ball seasted cock
Relief valves
Explain the function of a pressure relief valve
It is placed in a system to protect against over pressurisations
Explain the function of a non-return valve
Allows substances through without obstruction unless a reversal of flow or pressure force which forces
the valve to shut
State two diffrent types of non-return valve
Flap Valve
Piston valve
Globe valve
What are the two main types of pump and how do they differ
Dynamic pump
Low pressure , high volume
Positive pump
High pressure , low volume
A gear pump is what type of pump
Positive displacment pump
State four system indicators
Pressure gauge & vaccum gauge
Tachometers
Thermometers
Flow meters
Voltage meters
What is the purpose of a tachometer
It is used to measure the speed of a moving body or substances
State 3 types of thermometers
Thermometer
Standerd pockets
Sheathed or cased thermometers
Clock
What is the purpose of a filter and what may be used in its construction
They remove finer particals used in a higher standard of clenillness
If a filter becomes blocked what will happen to the pressure on the supply and dicharge side
The pressure will increase on the supply sode and decreasses pressure on the discharge side
What is the purpose of the pressure control valve
To maintain system pressure at designated set level
What is the purpose of rod gearing
It allows a valve to be shut manullay from a remote location
What is the purpose of an accumulator and what types may be used
It is a device in which potental energy is held under pressure in the form of a compressed gas or spring
Types are
- bladder bag
- spring
State what is a header tank
It is a reservoir to top up a tank or system
Explain what a service tank does ?
It is a reservoir for clean, water free fuel
