Step 1) Set equations equal to each other
AM = MB
Step 2) Substitute equations 
2x + 12 = 3x + 6
Step 3) Combine like terms
2x + 12 - 2x - 6 = 3x + 6 - 2x - 6
6 = x
Step 4) Back substitute to solve for AM
AM = 2x + 12 = 2(4) + 12
AM = 20
Step 5) Find MB
Since AM = MB, then MB = 20
Step 6) Substitute to find AB
AB = AM + MB, by Segment Addition Postulate 
Then, AB = 20 + 20 = 40
