Did Danny Elfman have any training on composing
No he was self taught
What did he want to be
A filmmaker
Which director does he work closely with a lot
Tim Burton, He brought Elfman to public attention
What is his most common style of composing
He scores his music around leitmotifs and develops them through variations
What is Penguins Leitmotif
It is very theatrical and uses the organ to make it very dramatic and evil. His theme is constantly altered and manipulated to fit the onscreen action,
It is constantly echoes through the orchestra which makes it feel familiar
What is Batman’s theme
It uses brass and is more traditionally heroic- it uses ascension and descension to show he is morally grey,
What other melodic features are used throughout
Lots of chromatic movement
Continuous semiquavers and ostinatos give the piece a sense of urgency and movement
Rippling chords on the harp and legato phrases on the strings contrast the rapid movement and match onscreen action
How is tonally ambiguity created
Use of diminished and dominant 7th,
Chromatic shifts,
Unprepared modulation,
It makes the audience feel confused while watching- confirms the scene
How is the key outlined
By ascending and descending arpeggios (harp and strings)
Can you tell the tonality
Due to a strong tonic pedal and bare 5ths an unnerving and mysterious feeling is created as you can’t tell if it is major or minor
How is tension created in the harmony
Through unusual leaps and intervals
The tritone C minor to F# minor
How does a plagal cadence work with penguin
It relates to his leitmotif as it references religious/organ music
What happens at bar 57
There is a grand C major chords that contrasts the minor theme surrounding it- it emphasises the title on screen
How does the choir create a sad, weeping idea
Through falling 3rds
What happens in the last line
It seems to settle on C# major then there is two bars of C# minor before it ends on C# and G# - it is very tonally ambiguous and unconventional which gives an unsettling sense of place
What is the tonality
It is mostly minor- it opens in B flat minor and ends in D minor
What is the tonal centre
B flat
What is the effect of modulations
It mostly modulates to minor keys with chromatic shifts,
this changes the feeling and emotions but keeps the underlying sadness- it also speeds up the pace
What type of score does he use
A classic film score with a symphony orchestra,
He gives very detailed instructions on techniques such as dynamics, articulation and phrasing
What playing techniques does he use
Pizzicato, tremolando, con sord, flutter tonguing and timpani rolls
How are the wacky aspects of the film represented through instrumentation
Through unique instrument techniques
How is the penguin represented through instrumentation
He uses a mixture of childlike instruments like the celesta, piccolo and harps with more dark and sinister instruments like the organ, choir and low brass which reflects penguins need for childhood and family alongside his heartless actions
What is the effect of the organ
It represents the ‘bad guy’ as it has a dark, sinister and evil feel
What is the effect of the harp
It has an angelic, delicate sound that can easily be lost and overpowered, commonly used when there is a close, personal connection in a scene
