The Union attacked the Confederacy. The Confederacy was prepared, 5000 troops were killed and the Union retreated.
It was the first big battle of the civil war.

The Union won. It overlapped Gettysburg battle and they got the control of the Missisipi, led by Ulises Grant.

1862, Tennessee. The confederacy did a surprise attack on the Union, they won the first day but the Union didn’t retreat and finally won the battle.
Stop the south from regaining the rivers.

The Union won. Lee’s effort to take the war north, didn’t destroy the confederate army. On the first day the confederates were successful but they could not hold on.
