Bayonet Charge Flashcards

Q

“Suddenly he awoke and was running- raw”

A

The adverb plunges the reader immediately into the action it describes. The reader is caught off-guard and feels unprepared, perhaps like the soldiers. He is depicted as being in a vulnerable and confused state

The soldier immediately starts running, suggesting that he is under threat. The soldier is also trying to escape the reality that he’s in

The adjective ‘raw’ could also suggest his inexperience as a soldier

Q

“Was he the hand pointing that second? He was running”

A

The clock imagery also highlights the cyclical, endless nature of war

Alliteration- the soldier feels his own insignificance

Second person pronoun- the soldier remains anonymous. He could represent any soldier, but it also reinforces the view that he is insignificant in the grand scheme of the war

Q

“Threw up a yellow hare that rolled like a flame”

A

The verb shows the careless, senseless violence that characterises conflict. The hare is depicted as helpless here

The colour, coupled with the pain of the hare, symbolises how life is brutally snuffed out by war

The colour ‘yellow’ could also symbolise the fear and panic felt by the soldier

Simile- reinforces the pain felt by the hare and the speed at which the hare is trying to escape
