Bearing arrengements Flashcards

1
Q

What bearings are suitable when bearing intervals are short and shaft shrinkage don’t greatly affect bearing operation?

A

A pair of angular contact ball bearings or tapered roller bearings, used in paired mounting to accommodate axial load.
After mounting, the axial clearance is adjusted using nuts or shims.

Q

What bearings are suitable to accomodate heavy axial load

A

Heavy axial load can be accommodated using thrust bearings together with radial bearings.

Q

What are floating bearing arrangement and what bearings are suitable?

A

There is “fixed” side and a “floating” side. The fixed side controls the shaft axially. The floating side has more freedom of movement (floating) to help compensate for misalignment and thermal expansion/contraction.
Are common with self-aligning ball bearings, deep groove ball bearings and spherical roller bearings.

Q

Why should 1 bearing be avoided? Why should more than 2 be avoided?

A

1 bearing alone can’t hold the moment.

More than 2 leads to unexpected extra loads
