Bearings (1) Flashcards
(23 cards)
2 main categories of bearings
Plain and element bearings
A bearing accommodates and supports
Motion and force
Radial load
Load acts in a right angle to the shaft
Axial load
Load that acts parallel to the axis of rotation.
2 most important factors in bearing choice
Speed (v-velocity) and load (p-pressure)
A bearing with no rolling element is-
A plain bearing
Inside race is-
Shaft bore
Outside race is
Housing bore
What direction of rotation is acceptable for a plain bearing.
Radial, linear, axial, and oscillating.
A plain bearing is your best choice if the movement is-
Oscillating (moves back and forth, doesn’t make a full rotation)
What are the two main categories on plain bearings-
Metallic or non metallic.
What are some metals metallic plain bearings are made of.
Bronze, copper, aluminum, lead, and silver
What do non metallic plain bearings excel?
Wide temperature range, structural integrity, cost to performance ratio, shock and vibration.
What do metallic plain bearings excel at?
High load capacity, wide temperature range, structural integrity, and cost to performance ratio.
What are the three things that determine viscosity?
How it pours, stirs, and handles pressure.
Depth of lubrication groove is?
A QUARTER OF THE WALL THICKNESS.
Boundary lubrication-
Bearing and shaft rub, only a thin film. (Least desirable)
Mixed film-
Less metal to metal contact than boundary but still slight metal to metal contact.
Full film or hydrodynamic lubrication-
Thick continuous film, no metal to metal contact.
How would you change boundary lubrication to mixed film or full film/hydrodynamic?
Increase shaft speed, increase viscosity of lubricant, decrease load, improve shaft finish.
What are the two types of self lubrications in plain bearings?
Lubrication plugs (holes in housing)
Solid lubricated (liners are centered when casted)
centered- powdered when casted to create small voids
Extreme service environment bearings can withstand what temperatures?
-200F — 900F
What are the 3 types of motion
Rotary, linear, and combined
