alliteration
the repitition of similair consonant, usually at the beginning of words. these words are usually important and stressed words tht have a meaning in the poem.
(a good cook could cook as many cookies as a good cook who could cook cookies)
black humor
absurd and often horrible way to make fun of something that most people take seriously
(i have many jokes about unemployed people, sadlu none of them work)
euphemism
a euphemism is when a more mild or indirect word or expression is used in the place of another word or phrase that is considerd harsh, blut, vulgar or unpleasent. (passed away instead of dead)
hyperbole
hyperbole is an exaggerated statement that’s not meant to be taken litterally by the reader. it is often used for comedic and/or emphasis. (it cost an arm and a leg)
lamb
a combination of an unstressed and a stressed syllable
irony
a situation is said to be ironic when the oppisite happens of what you expected
imagery
the use of pictures in words, this may be an metaphor, simile or symbol
limerick
a short, usually humorous poem rhyming aa bb a
narrator
the person who tells the story

comparisson without ‘as’or ‘like’ (she is an early bird)
metre
a fixed recurrent rhythm in language, in english this is usually iambic. you get this when you alternate an unstressed syllable with a stressed one as in
movement
movement of the lines. the meaning of the words may force the rhythm to go in another direction than the mertre
oxymoron
an oxymoron is a combination of two words that together, express a contradictory meaning. this device is often used for emphasis, humor, to create tension or to illustrate a paradox. (biitersweet, deafening silence)
paradox
a statement that seems on its face to face to be self-contradictory or absurd, yet turns out to have a valid meaning (all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others)
personification
when a abstract conept is spoken as if it were human
pun
play on words. (a boiled egg every morning is hard to beat)
repetition
the repeating of words, phrases or entire lines for the sake of emphasis or rhythm
simile
comparison with ‘as’ or ‘like’ (cold as ice)
setting
the time and place where the action of a story or poem is shown as happening
satire
is genre of writing that criticizes something, such as a person, behaviour, belief, government, or society. satire often emloys irony, humour and hyperbole to make its point
stanza
a stanze is a unified group of lines in poetry. such a group may consist of any number of lines. most common are: couplet (2)
tercet (3)

sestet (6)

symbol
something in a story or poem that litterally is what it is and stands for something else. (rose stand for love)
