Behavioral Development Flashcards
Altricial young
Helpless, naked, poor locomotion
Precocial young
Good locomotion, fur/feathers, good sensory abilities
Imprinting
Form of learning in which individuals exposed to certain key stimuli, usually during an early stage of development, form an association with the object
Filial imprinting
Social attachment (usually parent-offspring)
Sensitive period
Period in which animals can form attachment
Critical period
Part of sensitive period in which attachment is most easily formed
Sensory modalities
Senses used for imprinting, e.g. sound, scent, sight; multiple modalities best
Sexual imprinting
Direct sexual behavior toward specific objects; species isolating mechanisms, e.g. members of the same species
