what are piagets cognitive stages of development
1) sensorimotor stage 0-2yo
- mainly only sensation and motor skills
2) preoperational 2-7 yo
- use mental ability to represent events and objects in various ways using symbols, gestures and communication
- centration: focus on only one aspect of a situation at a time
- egocentrism: assume people see, hear, feel the way you do
- animism: belief that inanimate objects have human feelings and intentions
3) concrete operational 7-11 yo
- child can think operationally
- logical reasoning rather than intuitive thought
4) formal operational 11 to adulthood
- children become more systematic and reasonable
- possess capability of reasoning and thinking in more abstract ways
