What is the trinity

A

The bible presents God as a Holy Trinity, as being one God but having three distinct parts - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Each these is God and there id only one God.

God the Father

A
  • Christians believe that God the Father is the creator of the universe.
  • in the bible Christian’s are taught to speak to God using the phrase ‘Abba’ meaning daddy - a way of showing the close, loving relationship that Christians may have with the creator, like with a loving parent.
  • god as the Father also conveys a sense of safety and protection for those who are his followers.

God the Son

  • Jesus is believed to be God in human form.
  • Christian’s believe that Jesus was not conceived naturally but was placed in Mary by the Holy Spirit.
  • they believe that Jesus was free of all sin because he was not made by two humans, unlike all other humans.
  • god came to earth in the form of Jesus for three main purposes:
    • to reveal himself to people, sowing his love and power and teaching them how he wants people to live
    • to sacrifice himself on the cross, receiving god’s punishment for human sin in order for repentant people to be forgiven
    • to rise from the dead to show that God has power over dear, that he is eternal, and the Christians, too, may have an everlasting life in heaven after death.

God the Holy Spirit

  • in the New Testament of the bible the spirit of god is often referred to using the Greek word paraclete, meaning one who cones alongside someone else.
  • the Holy Spirit is understood to be the part of God that is with Christians as their instant guide and comforter.
  • “all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit…” - although Jesus was gone, the disciples now knew the spirit of god was with them, as Jesus has promised.
