What happened there?
Fastest growing city in India.
Reasons for this fast growth?
The Electronics City attracted TNCs, airports appeared and mainly the fast growing tech industry at that time unlike nowhere else.
How did the economy shift?
From manufacturing to utilisation of skills.
200 engineering colleges to prepare people for higher paying jobs in the tertiary and quaternary industries.
Benefits of this shift in economical activity?
FDI, knowledge economy, better paying jobs, more tax collected so more disposable income for governments, provision of jobs, new infrastructure, diversity etc.
Issues created by a fast growing economy?
Migration of people from elsewhere looking for jobs caused overpopulation. It was more than double in 2015 (10.8mil) in comparison with 2001.
What were the reasons for using Bengaluru as an outsourcing city?
Due to the difference in the time zones between India and America, they had a 24 hour work day, tax incentives, no language barrier, skilled workers for their cheap labour etc.
How did the caste system change?
The caste system which was assigned from birth depending on who your parents are was disrupted when immigrants from HICs came.
Positives of this change?
50% of people married someone who is not part of their caste.
Employers would choose their workers if they were from lower castes if they worked harder than higher castes and therefore generated more money for the company.
Negatives of this change?
The other 50% are still marrying people from their caste.
Politically the power is held by those in higher castes so a small group controls a bigger group.
