What is blepharitis?
Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelid margins.
What are the common causes of blepharitis?
It may be due to meibomian gland dysfunction (posterior blepharitis) or seborrhoeic dermatitis/staphylococcal infection (anterior blepharitis).
In which patients is blepharitis more common?
Blepharitis is more common in patients with rosacea.
What is the function of the meibomian glands?
The meibomian glands secrete oil onto the eye surface to prevent rapid evaporation of the tear film.
What symptoms are associated with blepharitis?
Symptoms include bilateral grittiness and discomfort, sticky eyes in the morning, and red eyelid margins.
What complications can arise from blepharitis?
Styes and chalazions are more common, and secondary conjunctivitis may occur.
What is a recommended management for blepharitis?
Softening the lid margin using hot compresses twice a day.
What is ‘lid hygiene’ in the context of blepharitis management?
‘Lid hygiene’ involves mechanical removal of debris from lid margins.
What solutions can be used for lid hygiene?
Cotton wool buds dipped in cooled boiled water and baby shampoo or sodium bicarbonate in cooled boiled water.
What can be given for symptom relief in patients with dry eyes?
Artificial tears may be given for symptom relief.
