  • All mothers are encouraged to offer the first feed in skin contact where the baby shows signs of readiness to feed.
  • Mothers and babies who are unable to have skin to skin immediately are commenced to encourage skin to skin as soon as possible

what are the 9 stages of lactation

A

9 stages of lactation - on average take baby 62mins
1. Birth Cry: The initial cry as the baby takes their first breath.
2. Relaxation: The baby is quiet and still, recovering from birth.
3. Awakening: The baby starts showing signs of activity, like small head and shoulder movements.
4. Activity: The baby’s movements become more deliberate, including rooting and lip movements.
5. Rest: The baby may pause between activities or stages. – baby is not getting on the breast.
6. Crawling: The baby uses their limbs to move towards the breast, often sliding or pushing.
7. Familiarization: The baby reaches the breast and nipple, licking and exploring.
8. Suckling: The baby self-attaches to the breast and begins to suckle.
9. Sleeping: After suckling, the baby typically falls asleep
